Heal Your Hernia from the Inside Out
Breathing, Posture & Pressure Management for Abdominal Support
Heal Your Hernia from the Inside Out teaches you to look beyond the site of the hernia and consider the whole pressure-management system of the body—including the diaphragm, pelvic floor, abdominal wall, rib cage and psoas region.
A hernia involves both tissue integrity and pressure. The way you breathe, sit, stand, exercise, cough, sneeze, laugh, lift and move can influence pressure within the abdominal cavity and against the abdominal wall.
FitAlign® uses resistance breathing, posture training, proprioception and neuromuscular repatterning to help you become aware of how you create and manage pressure throughout your day—not only while exercising.
Rather than simply tightening the abdominal muscles or “holding the belly in,” this practice teaches you to work with the body's natural breathing and pressure-management mechanisms to tone and coordinate the trunk from the inside out.
In this practice you'll learn to:
• Coordinate the diaphragm, pelvic floor and deep core
Explore how the diaphragm, abdominal wall and pelvic floor coordinate as pressure changes during breathing and movement. You'll also bring awareness to the psoas and its relationship to the spine, pelvis, breathing mechanics and whole-body movement.
• Change the way you inhale and exhale
Learn resistance-breathing techniques designed to reduce unnecessary bracing and pressure against the abdominal wall while developing functional core support.
• Manage pressure when coughing, sneezing and laughing
How you manage pressure during everyday activities matters. Learn techniques for coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting and getting up and down without unnecessarily bearing down or increasing pressure against the abdominal wall.
• Tone your trunk from the inside out
Instead of constantly pulling your belly in, holding your breath or forcefully tightening the abdominal muscles, learn to use the movements of breathing to activate and coordinate your trunk.
• Recognize exercise positions that may work against you
Not every exercise is appropriate for someone with a hernia. Learn why breath holding, forceful abdominal bracing, some forms of inversion, and excessive stretching through the abdomen and hip region may create unnecessary strain or pressure.
You'll explore alternatives that emphasize breathing, support and controlled functional movement rather than forcing the body into extreme positions.
• Learn better ways to sit
Sitting posture can affect the space available for movement of the rib cage, diaphragm and abdominal contents. Learn practical sitting strategies designed to reduce unnecessary compression through the abdomen and allow greater freedom for diaphragmatic breathing.
• Improve posture at the nervous-system level
Posture isn't simply something you consciously “hold.” Your nervous system continually coordinates breathing, balance, muscle activity and movement. FitAlign uses breath, proprioception and neuromuscular repatterning to help establish more supportive everyday movement habits.
Your everyday habits matter
A workout may last an hour, but you breathe, sit, stand and move all day.
That's why Heal Your Hernia from the Inside Out goes beyond a collection of exercises.
You'll learn to recognize how your breathing habits, sitting posture, abdominal tension, exercise positions and everyday movements influence pressure through the abdominal wall—and practice alternatives designed to create greater space, support and coordination.
The goal isn't to hold your stomach in or make your abdomen rigid. It's to help the diaphragm, pelvic floor, abdominal wall, rib cage and surrounding musculature work together as an integrated pressure-management system.
Can better breathing and movement help you avoid surgery or recurrence?
For some people, conservative management of a hernia may be appropriate. Improving the way you breathe, move and manage intra-abdominal pressure may help reduce unnecessary stress on the abdominal wall.
In my work with FitAlign, I have had clients with inguinal and umbilical hernias report significant improvement while using these techniques without surgery. I have written and video testimonials in which clients describe their experiences and the changes they observed.
Some clients have reported being able to avoid or postpone surgery while using these techniques.
These experiences are one reason I developed this program and why I believe breathing, posture, movement and pressure management deserve greater attention when dealing with a hernia.
Individual results vary. These testimonials should not be interpreted as proof that FitAlign can anatomically close every hernia or that everyone can safely avoid surgery. I recommend having a hernia medically evaluated so you understand its type, severity and treatment options.
Repairing a hernia doesn't automatically retrain the body
A surgical repair can address the physical defect, but it does not automatically retrain how you breathe, cough, sneeze, laugh, lift, sit, stand, exercise or manage intra-abdominal pressure.
It doesn't automatically change your posture or movement habits.
That is the part of the equation FitAlign addresses.
Rather than focusing only on the site of the hernia, FitAlign considers the relationship among the diaphragm, pelvic floor, abdominal wall, rib cage, psoas, posture, breathing and nervous system.
Learning to recognize and change unnecessary pressure-producing habits can be valuable whether you're managing a hernia conservatively or working with appropriate medical guidance before or after surgical repair.
If you're considering surgery
I recommend that anyone with a suspected or diagnosed hernia receive an appropriate medical evaluation. Some hernias require surgical treatment.
If surgery is recommended, educate yourself about the available options. I personally prefer to avoid permanent synthetic mesh and encourage people to investigate non-mesh tissue-repair options using the body's own tissue with a surgeon experienced in these techniques when medically appropriate.
Surgical mesh has also been the subject of extensive litigation involving allegations of complications such as chronic pain, infection, adhesions, mesh migration and the need for additional surgery; for this reason, I encourage people considering hernia surgery to learn about both mesh and non-mesh repair options.
Most importantly, whether you choose conservative management or surgery, addressing the breathing, posture, movement and pressure habits that affect your abdominal wall every day is an important part of the bigger picture.
Support your body from the inside out
Whether you are managing a hernia conservatively under medical supervision, considering treatment options, preparing for surgery, or returning to movement after treatment with appropriate clearance, FitAlign gives you tools to become more aware of how you breathe, create pressure, organize your posture and use your core throughout the day.
Rather than thinking of the abdomen as something that needs to be constantly tightened, flattened or held in, this practice teaches you to experience the trunk as a dynamic, breathing structure.
Learn to create space for your breath, coordinate your core, reduce unnecessary compression and develop movement habits designed to better support your abdominal wall throughout everyday life.
The goal is a trunk that can breathe, respond, stabilize and move as an integrated whole—from the inside out.
Important: This program is educational movement training and is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. Seek prompt medical attention for a hernia that becomes suddenly or severely painful, firm or very tender, changes color, cannot be pushed back in when it previously could, or is accompanied by vomiting or significant abdominal symptoms.
